Have you come across a scenario, where your pie chart shows the distributions of data based on a particular metric, say product, and over a period of time when the number of products increase, then the Pie Chart has to show all the products, which results in a very cluttered Pie Chart and makes it difficult to digest the information presented, leaving your chart in a non usable state. Having large number of categories means that the Pie contains a large number of slices (one per category) and as the number of slices grow, chart becomes less and less intuitive to the users and at some point, it gets into a state, where no one can use it to derive meaning conclusions.
