SQL Server 2012 (code-named “Denali”) has introduced some major enhancements to improve the Availability of SQL Server and ensure High Availability all the time.

Following are the High Availability Enhancements in SQL Server 2012:

  • AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances
  • AlwaysOn Availability Groups
  • Online Operations

AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances

This feature enhances the existing SQL Server Failover Clustering feature with advanced capabilities like Failover across Data Centers and lot more.

AlwaysOn Availability Groups

This feature goes on to extend and enhance the feature of SQL Server Database Mirroring to ensure High Availability of the User/Application Databases. This feature allows Failover at a database level thereby allowing us to Failover a set of databases together as against the previous approach of Failover on a Server.

Online Operations

Some of the operations which previously used to be allowed only in offline mode, are not allowed in online mode thereby increasing the availability of SQL Server. This includes the following two features:

Articles/FAQs/Case Studies

Virtual Labs

White Papers/Guides

If you know of any other resources that will make a good addition to the above list, please do let me know in the comments section below and I will be happy to add it to the above list 🙂

That is all for now. Stay tuned for more updates, links, and references on SQL Server 2012’s Latest and Greatest Features.
